The 3 P’s of Allergen-Friendly:

Processing, Preservatives, and Packaging.

If you or someone you know has allergies, there are 3 key areas to consider. Each person will react differently based on their level of sensitivity.

The 3P’s or key areas are processing, preservatives, and packaging. As a person with allergies and intolerances to corn and corn derivatives, to mold, and to grass, my level of sensitivity forced me to research deeper. The knowledge I gained was more vast than the food industry’s knowledge. I was shocked. Today I use my knowledge to help companies in the allergen-friendly world understand how to better communicate with their customers.

So let’s look at an overview of the 3 P’s. We will be doing blogs on each of the 3 P’s over the next few weeks.


This is the area I gained the MOST knowledge. When I have discussions with companies, this is the one area they are most unaware of as well. Most food companies do not know how the ingredients they buy to make their food are made. In the next blog we will cover how consumers have had to educate themselves to stay safe. The flip side is most food companies do not understand how untrustworthy they are because of their lack of knowledge. It may not be at the c-level but it is at the customer service level. We will explore issues like: why most celiac’s cannot eat gluten-free product in the United States.


Preservatives have become a buzz word, similar to Gluten-Free. In both situations, these buzzwords have caused real harm to those who actually need to be careful. Companies do not understand the chemical compounds they are using to help you keep your food longer. For the average person? This is not a big deal. But if you are marketing to growing allergy community, you NEED to know what you are doing. We’ll explore issues like why you cannot trust buying organic fruits and vegetables in your grocery store. (Hint: only safe place to buy organics is a certified organic farmer’s market)


In my own journey, this was the lesson that shocked me the most. As I stated I have an allergy to corn and corn derivatives. I have allergic reactions to drinking water our of plastic bottles. Why? Plastics are made from corn. I will delve more into how packaging can impact those with allergies.

The bonus my research has given me is a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. These blogs are not intended to turn you away from how you make your food for mass production. The intent is to help you understand what consumers need to consider before they purchase a product. When food companies are better educated on food. Their customer service teams will be better educated. Which leads to your brand having higher loyalty. Do you want to be a brand consumers can trust? Or a brand that everyone in the allergen community blacklists?
